Under Brazilian coach Didi the nation qualified for the 1970 World Cup - its first for four decades - by eliminating Argentina. A wonderfully attack-minded side featuring national legends like Sotil, Chumpitaz, Oblitas and Cubillas surpassed all expectations by reaching the Second Round. It was a similar story at the 1978 World Cup when a team written off as too old qualified from a tough group before being eliminated by hosts Argentina. Sandwiched between their two World Cup adventures was a Copa America success in 1975, the first in the tournament since 1939 and their most recent to date.
